What is Elsewhere By Design?
Elsewhere by Design is a nonprofit interior decorating organization based in Roanoke, Virginia. We partner with individuals and families navigating life’s challenges, using thoughtful design as a catalyst for empowerment, stability, and forward movement—from where they are to where they are working to be.
We also collaborate with community-serving organizations, creating nurturing, functional spaces that support the people who show up every day to care for others. By improving the environments where support work happens, we help make daily work more sustainable and dignified.
At its core, Elsewhere by Design creates spaces that feel good to exist in—so people are better positioned to do good, and to do it well.
Why Space Matters
Space quietly shapes how people show up in the world.
The places where we live, rest, learn, and work influence how safe we feel, how we connect, and how we move through hard seasons. When a space feels chaotic, temporary, or neglected, it can be difficult to focus, dream, or heal.
Thoughtfully designed environments offer more than comfort—they create steadiness. They give families room to breathe, children a sense of security, and caregivers the support they need to keep going.
